Friday Dec.7th

The weeks are flying by.  The students are busy learning new skills and practicing skills we've learned. We have been using our A.P.E. graphic organizer to help us add details to our Open Response Questions.  We also researched figurative language that would help make our writing more interesting.  The students are striving to use, proverbs, idioms, adages, and similes in their writing.

We finished Unit 3 in math on Multiplication and Division, although this is a unit that never really ends.  Multiplication facts are such a foundation for math we will be reviewing these concepts through centers and games.  Our next unit we started this week is Decimals.

I look forward to seeing you at conferences next week!

Wow What a Great Day!!

We had a great day on our field trip.  The students were VERY well behaved and learned about Biometrics. They also had a nice time visiting The Hall.  Thank you to the PCC for sponsoring our trip.  This is a video of the kids working in their groups, and some of our time in The Hall.

As a class we are enjoying the book The One and Only Ivan.  It is a book filled with so much emotion!  We are also enjoying sharing it with students from around the world.  Today we made posters to show our support for them.  Check out our video if you can. Save Ivan and Ruby

Week in Review

It is hard to believe September is over.  Seventeen days into the school year and we are building a great classroom community.  We have spent time getting to know each other and the routines.  I know we are going to have a great year.  We have finished our first unit in Math.  We finished our first interactive read aloud.  The book was The Landry News by Andrew Clements.  It was a book that touched most of us deeply.  I think we will be seeing some Andrew Clements titles being read during independent reading.  We might even do another one together, but our next read aloud will be the start of our participation in the Global Read Aloud project.    We will be reading The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate.  We will be continuing to interact with the book in our classroom while hopefully also interacting with a global community of learners.  I am excited both for the book and the experience.  We will keep you updated.

Our First Week

The first week of school was a great success!  We are spending time getting to know each other and learning the routines of the classroom.  We have enjoyed some great books, and had good discussions about them, as we began Reader's Workshop.  We have started using our Math journals and learning about geometry.  Next week we will continue to learn more about geometry and we will begin Writer's Workshop.

Field Day was a fun day.  We played together and showed great team work.  By the end of the day we were silly and worn out.

The students hard work paid off in the results of our brick tests.  Most students had some success in at least one of the tests.  Here they are with their bricks before the 1st test.

Brick project

The brick projects are in the process of being tested, and they are doing great.  I enjoyed hearing about the process that the students were going through to make their bricks.  They were all making and testing hypothesis which was great!  Every broken brick seemed to spark reflecting, analyzing, and planning for the next one.

Wow! I can't tell you how exciting it is to be back the energy from the kids is great.  They did a wonderful job on their voices of the past projects.  I was so happy to get back to hear them present and to meet the people they interviewed.  Thanks to everyone for their kind words.
